BURMA-NEW HOT SPOT-DISPUTE/CONFLICT?
Posted by Site Staff on Monday May 12, 2008
Romesh Ratnesar and The National Public Radio (NPR) report:
Burma as a result of a natural disaster (cyclone) is in need of massive amounts of aid to the region. People are without food, water or medical care; we are speaking of thousands upon thousands of victims not a few. Some estimates are that without aid we are speaking of a million. Numerous countries have sent aid to no avail.
The junta in Burma, which is attempting or has already taken power through a referendum held May 10,2008 has refused to allow the distribution of this aid or foreign persons on its’ soil. The U.S has ships in the Gulf of Thailand waiting to be unloaded (aid); they have not received permission from the Burmese to do so. There are aid workers being held at the main airport in Burma. Food has been seized by the junta. No aid is presently getting into the country to save the lives of victims or to simply distribute on the scene.
The world is now looking at this present serious dispute. It just so happens that the referendum held yesterday coincided with the cyclone’s aftermath. The junta believing it can win the mounted violent tactics to insure their victory and tightened control over the region.
The United Nations is considering its’ options such as sanctions or possibly intervention. Discussions going on now include humanitarian intervention, unilateral intervention or actual war type maneuvers to get aid to the people.
This matter which likely began as a dispute is now spiraling into possible conflict on a world level. This is genocide with the junta knowing of the level of death, refusing to allow aid in.
China may be asked to intervene to speak with the powers to be in the region. In the meantime people are dying.
Officials in the U.N. The Myanmar Government in Burmas has not intervened to distribute Aid.
Robert Gates the U.S. Secretary of Defense has stated that he cannot imagine intervening with military force.
Airdrops of The Marshall plan type in Berlin are being considered.
In the meantime people die at a steady rate.
The former U.N. EMERGENCY RELIEF COORDINATOR, Jan Egeland believes intervention is necessary permission granted or not.
Are we all to forget the lessons of Neville Chamberlain and Adolph Hitler in Munich, Joseph Stalin or Pol Pot? What are we waiting for? Will we all allow greed, power and desire for control? to succeed over the lives of innocent people.
When we are looking genocide in the face it must be stopped immediately no matter where in the world.
This newsletter believes it has a responsibility to speak out. This writer has seen first hand the affects of tyranny and it is not pretty.
Should this situation go on another minute someone has to step in to save lives. The Burmese and the junta seem to be reluctant to allow foreign soldiers or civilians on their land to help. In the meantime, people are dying. Hesitation by those who can help will not do here. We all must move now, like today.
THANK YOU FOR READING THIS IMPORTANT SUPPLEMENT. WHEN THIS NEWSLETTER SEES A MANAGEABLE DISPUTE DEVELOPING INTO A POSSIBLE CONFLICT INVOLVING INNOCENT LIVES IT WILL SPEAK OUT.WE ARE NOT HAWKS BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. THIS WORLD HAS THE ABILITY TO STOP THIS IN ITS’ TRACKS. WE ONLY HAVE TO ACT. LET US ALL PRAY THAT THIS IS STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. THE POINT FOR OUR READERSHIP IS TO WATCH ESCALATION OF DISPUTE INTO WHAT COULD BE CONFLICT ON THE JOHN BURTON SCALE OF CONFLICT.
